I recently chose to leave my career and begin something new. I made this choice for a number of reasons – most of them personal. However, some of my reasons might be common to you. I wanted to be more flexible in the time I spent working. I wanted to be at home more with my wife and kids. I wanted to have a different job doing something different.
A huge question I had to answer was, “Can I make enough money doing this to pay all of the bills?”
In short, the answer for me is yes.
How much money can I make teaching English online?
Let me start from a different angle. I don’t need to make that much money. My goal is to earn £1000 each month from home employment. This isn’t a lot of money and should be pretty manageable. The only added difficulty is I want to make £1000 per month while only working about 20 hours per week.
My current schedule is Tuesday through Sunday, 3:30 – 7:30 AM and Friday 12:30 – 2:30 PM. I know this adds up to 26 hours. However, as you can see, most of these hours are being done while everyone else is asleep. I don’t mind the extra few hours because they kind of disappear in the night rather than taking up family time during the day.
How much income does 26 hours of work generate each week? Well, I’m not sure yet! However, my current average rate of pay is £12.40 per hour. I am not getting students scheduled for every hour – maybe three out of four sessions. So this works out to £240 a week – roughly. £240 per week is just over £1000 per month.
Can I earn enough money online to pay the bills?
The hopeful thing is I expect my income to increase. I am working for iTutor and am in their probationary period. After this period ends, I am eligible for pay raises and for other kinds of sessions. This will mean an increase in income. As my teaching skills increase, there will also be an increase in income. Finally, once I complete my TEFL course, I can apply for different kinds of work and even set out to do some work as a freelance English teacher. This will also mean an increase in income.
If you are thinking about making this kind of change, please let me tell you what I think:
Go for it! You can do it!
